Greg Thompson
President & CEO, Wellington West Capital Markets Inc.
Greg runs our Wellington West capital markets division, which focuses on institutional investors and corporate issuers in various sectors of the economy including energy, mining, agriculture, technology, and special situations. The capital markets division trades equities for institutional investors, raises equity for corporate issuers, and provides advisory services, including mergers and acquisitions and restructuring to corporate issuers. Greg and his partners founded the capital markets division in 2004 and became a 100% owned subsidiary of Wellington West in late 2007.
Greg joined the investment industry immediately after completing his MBA at Concordia University in Montréal in 1985. Greg’s first role was with a large independent security dealer, where he worked as a research associate for two years. Subsequently, Greg became a research analyst at Prudential Bache Securities in the late1980’s through 1992. Greg also worked as a research analyst at Midland Walwyn for 7 years, covering airlines, industrial products, agricultural related stocks, and special situations. This was followed by two years on the buy side where Greg was a portfolio manager.
In 1998 Greg joined Morgan Stanley where he worked as a research analyst covering life insurance and financial services stocks, as well as managing the technology investment research team and the financial services research team in New York.
After four years with Morgan Stanley Greg returned to Canada to help rebuild a large independent brokerage firm following structural challenges related to the correction in the technology boom from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Within two years of returning to Canada, Greg and his partners founded a capital markets business which is now known as Wellington West Capital Markets.
